The firepot should appear about 1/2 to 3/4 full after the furnace has been running for a while. A common error in running stoves and furnaces in to overdraft, and this will put more heat out the exhaust and less to the heat exchanger. I proved this by putting a meat thermometer in the duct above the furnace and closing the draft raised the temperature. If my exhaust is clean, I found I can completely close the draft on settings 1 and 2. On setting 3 I add some draft and 4&5 need a lot more draft. Settings 1-3 I leave the stirrer on 1. On setting 4&5 I put the stirrer on 3&4 accordingly. Some run the stirrer one number less than the heat setting. With pellets I get hard deposits on the firepot holes and this restricts airflow, so after a day or two of running, I increase the draft slightly. I can usually run a week before cleaning the pot.
Corn makes a lot of fly ash, although your mix with pellets will diminish that some. There are two chambers one on each side of the fire box. The narrow slots in the bottom of these chambers is where the airflow goes, and soot can quickly plug these chambers and greatly affect draft. AES recommends tapping the chambers daily with the stove tool to knock the soot down. With the furnace clean, you should be able to have a consistant burn.
The static pressure Olf20 mentioned is necessary according to AES for the most heat output and longevity of the heat exchangers.
