Hey Guys,

My name is Steve Klopfenstein and I live in Troy, Ohio. We have been burning corn for a number of years now with great sucsess in a small Cornflame unit. This unit has served us well over the last few years but it just was not big enough to heat the entire home. Anyway, earlier this year we decided it was time to upgrade to a unit that was capable to heat the whole house and use multiple fuels. I located a used Central Boiler Maxim 175 for sale earlier this fall and we decided to purchase. I had all the upgrades done to the stove before we installed it and so far it has been great. We are currently burning wood, I would rather burn corn but the price of corn has convinced me otherwise.

I have found that with the furnace located outside, the mess that come with any stove is much easier to deal with and the possiblility to burn different types of fuels may exist(grasses, straw, paper etc). I was hoping maybe someone here has also experimented with some of thesse things as well, and may be able to provide some feedback.

Anyway, hope to get to meet all of you and share my experiences as well and gain valuable information to help reduce our dependacies on oil products for heating.

Thanks
Steve

Not that he was a frequent poster, but I got an email from the wife of user, dalem on the old forum. Dale Madsen, died June 27th of this year of a massive heart attack. Dale was 49. His wife Darla, says she is not using the corn stove this year. I encouraged her to join the forum in case she wants to run the stove next year.

Hi, everyone my name is Joe and I am new to this forum and to pellet/corn stoves. I live in Salina Kansas and I was refered to this site by member wildman81. I Own a 1800 sft ranch stlye home built in the 1960's the home is part of and old AFB(Schilling) and isnt built the greatest. After 5 years and a few three hundred dollar gas bills, I decided to get some suplimental heat. I bought a woodstove about a month ago off of craigslist, it was a good deal, but I dreaded the thought of cutting and hauling wood and then tracking it through the house, plus I have bad asthma that requires medicine daily and I was worried about the health risks. Luck would have it wildman81 turned me on to a good deal on a pellet stove. Its a USSC Ashley/king 5500XL, It wss new never used still in the box but it is about 5 years old. I closed the deal for $500 cash and I felt good about it. I am the type of person that puts lots of research into a product before I buy it, and this wouldn't have been my favorite choice in a stove but the price was great. I have also came across a Simpson Duravent 3" complete horizontal chimney kit new in the box that a friend of mine who is a landlord found left in a basement by a previous renter! So with all my good fortune I am now scared something is going to go wrong, So I have joined this site to ask lots of questions! I am getting ready to go out in the garage and build a base to set the stove on. I am a flooring installer by trade and will be making a custom tiled base. So anyways any input on this stove, anything I can do to make sure it all goes smooth please let me know, and thanks in advance.

Been reading this forum for years and needed some help, see my post in the Quadrafire section. I don't burn much corn due to availability and quality in CT but burn lots of pellets. Been heating my 2200 sq ft colonial home with my 2006 Quadrafire MT Vernon AE Insert and saving lots on the home heating oil costs. I have found lots of information on this site that have helped me through the early MT Vernon AE issues, Thanks to all especially KAP. I live in NW CT and work as a technician for a Ford dealer so I am use to working on things that sometimes don't work like they should, mainly specialize in diesel repairs, 99 Ford Senior Master Tech. I don't let anyone repair anything for me as most haven't a clue as to what they are doing. So all stove repairs are done by me with the help of my not so knowledgeable dealer who provided the parts if if I hound him. Would of bought the MT Vernon stove from someone else but this dealer was the only one around in 2006 in the north east that had a MT Vernon Insert in mahogany so I got it from him. Glad I can fix things for my self. With out this site and the help of it's members I would have been lost. Thanks again everyone.

I am listed as a "newbie" but have been burning corn for about 5 years and was on the old list. I'm Jim Groves and live in Hyattsville, MD (inside the dreaded "beltway"), about 3 miles from the DC line and about 6 from the White House.

I am the "corn manager" for a Corn Cooperative (saveoursky.com) that has been around for about 10 years. It was started by Mike Tidwell who has written extensively about global climate (authors.simonandschuster.com/Mike-Tidwell/1773704) change and runs a local environmental group (Chesapeake Climate Action Network).

We have 2 "bins" that hold corn, one in Mt. Rainer, MD (about 15 ton capacity) and another in Takoma park, MD (about 20 ton). We have about 65 members from DC/MD and I think a couple from VA. We get our corn from a local farmer (who raises turkeys) and it is non-gmo, non-till, low pesticides.

I have 16 solar panels on my room, get my electricity from Wind Mills (www.cleancurrents.com) and try to live my life as green as possible.
I've read this site for a year or so, and just decided to add my 2 cents now and then. I've had a USSC 6100 for a couple of years and regretted most of it, although it does save alot on LP costs. The next time I'll do some research before buying. After this long I've learned some things through alot of trial and error, as I'm sure alot of you have.
I do have a question; I see alot of talk about clinker pots. I removed my agitator and it helped alot but the clinker can be hard to remove. Is there a picture/directions somewhere of a clinker pot that I can build?

I have been reading the forum for a couple of years and have now joined. I have received lots of good info from this forum and it is really apreciated. I live in central Michigan and installed a St.Croix SCF-50 in Sept. 09. I have read alot of post about the cost of corn. I don't have any way to store bulk corn so I buy 100lbs bags at the local grain elevator. 100lbs cost me $10.25 and using last years usage figures I will spend around $1500-$1800 this year depending on the weather. This is huge savings for me over the cost of the propane I was using. Porpane cost me $4000 a year to heat my home. (2500sqft) So I have cut my heating costs to less than half of what they were.

Subject: Well, I just locked the doors. - by: jabbott

The old forum is now all locked up. Hopefully it will continue to run for many years. I doubt it. But, as I say, hopefully. It is too bad there are so many people out there that spend so much time trying to break into things and mess them up. I guess life has always been this way. It just used to be you had to worry about someone from the wrong side of the tracks breaking into your house. Now, you have to worry about someone on the wrong side of the tracks in Russia, China or India breaking into your house.

I want to thank you, my users, for making this transition with me. I know it has been hard on all of you as well. It is never easy to learn new stuff. You have all done a great job too! Today we crossed over the point of seven hundred users. Actually, this is more active users (people who have been logged in over the past 30 days) than the old forum had. Which I think is a pretty great milestone as well. A sign that Google likes this new software better than the old stuff too.

Over the next week I hope to add some more software tie in the wiki into the site better. I am able to install a plugin that allows you to user your forum username and password to login to the wiki. In fact, if I can get it totally working, you shouldn't even need to login twice. Once you are logged into the forum you should be able to just go over to the wiki and make changes there. It is my hope that people who find information useful will copy it from the forum to the wiki. Forums are dynamic, new forum software comes and goes. Who knows, seven years from now if these Kunena Software people are gone, we might be looking at having to do this all again, just like the last time. Wiki software on the other hand just keeps going. They fix any troubles that surface, but it doesn't change significantly. That is what makes it a good place for us to keep our valuable information. If I can do this, and make it easy enough, there will be the pain of maybe learning some new forum software some day, but there won't be the pain of loosing the information. It will be in the safe! I will keep you informed about how this is progressing.

So again, thank you all for your ability to look forward. I will continue to do the same. Keep those home kernels burning.
My wife and I live in Northern Indiana. We're raising early weaner-to-finish hogs. We get them when they're 2-3 weeks old and raise them to 270 lbs. When we're not busy with that, we're making our own bio-mass pellets to burn in our Bixby Max 115 stove to heat our house. We're looking for a boiler to heat our hog houses...getting tired of paying the high gas prices! We both enjoy bowling and bowl on a mixed church league once a week.
