TOPIC: I am getting sparks in my exhaust.

Re: I am getting sparks in my exhaust. 1 year, 2 months ago #14963

ok, the last few days outside air temps have gone up a lot. been in the 40's. I noticed my burn pot was getting to full. do the higher temps cause that? I increased the exhaust fan speed, and its good again. I mean to say, the burn pot is now maintaining it's normal pellet level. does that make sense? more air on warmer days?

That is normal. As the weather warms you will need to tweak things to keep a steady burn. Above 30 I couldn't even run the stove, it would drive me out of the house!

Warm air contains less oxygen so the stove will be burning rich and needs morte air or less fuel. opposite of the problem found when the temp drops.

thank you. we had really high winds last night from every direction and it turned my stove into a retard, lol. pot kept filling up and overflowing, no matter where I set the trimpots. I said the heck with it, went to bed and it was fine this morning when I got up. can't complain, it kept the house warm and did not go out.

Not sure what your exh set up is but I had the same problem with swirling winds and stove acting up. Finally got rid of the expensive endcap and added a 12 inch long galvanized stove pipe over the exh with a 90 degree elbow pointed down. That ended the problem and the stove ran dependable ever since. Lots of discussion and different ways of doing this but it is a simple fix to a very aggravating problem.

straight thru the wall with the cap. wouldn't the elbow allow exhaust air to be mixed with intake air?

The effects of weather are explained here:
forum.iburncorn.com/wiki/index.php/BixbyFAQ#External_Factors
Both temperature and barometric pressure changes affect the density of the air and hence its oxygen content. The effects of pressure changes can tend to cancel temperature changes, depending upon the direction of change. This might explain why not everyone agrees on the issue.

Vent modifications are discussed here:

Scroll down to pics of "stretch caps".

You can also build a wind screen as illustrated at the first link.

No because the 12 inch pice I described fits over the inner pipe and extends 12 inches away with the elbow on the end of the 12 inch pipe. Look at Cornys picture as that is another way to remedy your problem.
Still another way is to utilize a seperate fresh air pipe by moving the large black hose inside the stove to the hole below the exhaust and adding what ever pipe fits the hose so you can use that as a fresh air intake. I would buy a metal cap to plug the hole that the rubber flex hose covered.
