I sometimes can't resist a good buy. I have a Bixby MaxFire on the way and plan on burning wood pellets. I'm concerned about the following in the Bixby Wiki:

"The_Law reports that the fuel selection switch does not work well when the stove is operating the experimental 2.71 version of Bixcheck software. Specifically, the stove doesn't recognize changes to the switch setting unless the stove is already connected to a computer using Bixcheck. If this is an issue, then one can consider reverting to an earlier version software (e.g., 2.06)."

The Bixby I've purchased is brand new - never burned. Will I need to deal with the software in order to use this stove as planned?

Thanks in advance --- and thanks for the info on this site! Was referred to it through Hearth.com

your stove will have 2.06, bixby never put 2.71 in boards, they work better with 2.71, we have changed all and no problems, switch works in 2.71, there is also a newer version, 2.73, we don't use it but any boards i get repaired have that put in, once you upgrade it is somewhat of a problem to go back, never did it

Where do you get a copy of the 2.73?

Thanks

When you say Maxfire and new unburned you might be getting a 120 which has a different control board and different software in it. The 115s have a mother board and a igniter board beside the mother board.
The 120 has several knobs instead of just two like the 115.
The software package includes the UBB so it will say 120 or Big Block. The cable for connecting the 120 or the 115 is also different.

the 120 takes a straight 9 pin serial port cable on both ends, not sure if adapters will work from usb

The 120 and UBB uses same board and same cable.
The Zonet adapter will work.

Can anyone else confirm that the fuel selection switch works in 2.71 without the cable being connected to the stove and Bixcheck running? It's never worked on mine and Tomorkoski confirmed the problem? Perhaps he made a fix to the software, but never changed the version number? If that's the case, then installing the 'fixed' (if it exists) 2.71 would solve the switch problem. Or, if 2.73 exists and works with the 115, then perhaps this version would solve the problem too. I'd love to see the switch fixed. I would use it to change the convection fan speed: fast and loud at night and slow and quiet when watching tv. Same fuel program, just different fan speeds.

switch works on all i have ever changed, there was an earlier version out think 2.70, that didnt work
you can not change fan speed unless you change thermocouple settings, if you slow down it will go off on hi temp
if you have cable running on monitor it will show fuel selected, flip switch it should show that it switched, 271 is availiable at www.bixbyenergy/downloads.com, i have 2.73 but my email will not let me send it, not a lot of difference

Bixcheck can be used to change how the convection fan responds to the thermocouple. This gives some fan speed control; but as Blume says, you have to know what you're doing or you can have the fan running too slow for the stove's own good. It is explained here in the WIKI:
forum.iburncorn.com/wiki/index.php/Bixby...vection_Fan_Settings

The WIKI also discusses other ways to control the convection fanspeed. Some of these are theoretical. I don't know if anyone has tried them all.

Loaded 2.73. Running it as is right out of the folder. No changes made yet. We'll see how it goes. Somerset pellets

Switch shows position change on Bixcheck monitor when flipped on this version.
