I've been burning 100% corn in my 620-10 for the past 5 years with great success, but would like to try 100% wood pellets this winter. If I use high quality wood pellets will it work without doing a conversion?

Hi Ksninew, yes and no. You can, but the fire will burn low in the fire pot and the air pushes the heat and smoke back towards your bin, and you will get a nasty smoke smell. That is why I ordered the KIT.

Do you know where I can find information about the conversion kit or do I need to call LDJ?

You can see some pictures of GAD's Kit. I just called LDJ and order the KIT from them and had it in a couple days.

Hi guys, I am not burning due to the high corn prices. Burning pellets sounds like a temporary fix until corn prices come down some. Are the conversions only available from LDJ or is there an aftermarket kit out there too?

Hey CC, great to hear from ya! If you remember in the old forum, some folks did their own version, but there was one who had a burn back in the bin auger flighting. Not sure what else is out there, but pellets burn so much better, and hotter than corn, with the kit. Plus no clinker! That is the biggest plus.

Good to be back online here again! I called LDJ and the kit price is $165 for my 100K furnace. Is that what you guys have paid and does the price include new auger motors or aren't they necessary. There is no information on their website. I could get by with less than a bushel a day of corn in normal winter weather, how much will that increase with pellets? Sorry to ask all these questions but I sure would like to find a way to make it cost effective to use my furnace instead of LP.

I just answered some of my questions by reading the post up above about GAD's experience.

I paid the same price plus shipping from my closest dealer. 100k furnace does not require any motor change. Pretty simple set up. I am very satisfied with how things are working with 100% pellets.

Just "tuned in" to this site and I switched to 100% wood pellets because of the price of corn. What a story! This is for my 6 year old A-Maize-ing boiler. I have a 6 ton silo in my side yard that feeds into my hopper in the basement. First of all, I couldn't buy bulk pellets, only in bags so I loaded 200 bags (5 ton) of pellets up the grain auger into my silo. WHEW! Great exercise!
Next, things were working okay for a few days until the hopper auger jammed! I cleaned it out and tried to decrease the amount of pellets entering the auger by closing the trap half way, thinking that the auger was overwhelmed. No good! The pellets became jammed at the trap door! I then build a collar to go under the trap door to limit the amount of pellets entering the auger. Still jammed!
Now what! I started cleaning the pellets as they came out of the auger from outside with a screed. The pellets were chewed up by the grain auger as they entered the silo creating dust. Tried that. No luck. Then I remembered the bottle of graphite that came with the boiler 6 YEARS AGO! Dumped a bunch in the bottom of the hopper and the squeaking stopped and the whole thing started to work wonderfully! Now I just squirt some graphite near the hole of the hopper each time I refill the hopper with pellets.
So to answer your question, have I had success? Well, yeah. But I sure hope the price of corn keeps coming down!
