TOPIC: Classic Bay 1200i burning, giving off black soot

Classic Bay 1200i burning, giving off black soot 5 months, 3 weeks ago #16366

4th year burning without any major issues. Started this season with left over pellets from last year. I've noticed that every part of the stove is covered in black soot. I've not had this before. Also I'm having more mis - fires. After a few hours of running the stove turns off, the exhaust fan runs for a while, and when the stove calls for heat again I get a miss fire because there is a small klinker in the bottom of the pot. As soon as I knock it out the stove fires up and repeats the cycle. Another issue Iv seen this year is that after the stove turns off the pellets in the bottom of the pot smolder, and when the exhaust fan times out they still smolder giving the house a nice smokey smell. I've cleaned the everything that I've cleaned the last 3 years. Any suggestions of things to check?

I would buy a bag of pellets, to see if it is an issue with the leftover pellets. They may have a moisture issue going on. Also make sure the pot floor is closed all the way, and all holes are clear. Other issue may be a dirty exhaust path in stove, or exhaust pipe. Sometimes animals make nests in the end of the exhaust. Kap

Thanks for the ideas! I have switched to a new skid of pellets. I thought is was better because the stove cycled all night and it was still working this morning but when I got home the call light was on but no fire. Should you be able to feel air moving at the air intake? Just a thought. I will check and reclean exhaust and pipe. Thanks again for the ideas.

It sounds like an airflow issue. Do you have outside air hooked up? If so, make sure it is clean and unobstructed as well.

The outside air is not hooked up. But I will continue to look for air flow issues. Thanks

Thanks for the ideas. Tore into the stove on Sunday to tyr to figure this thing out. I pulled the exhaust motor off and found that the fan blades had a good coating of gunk on them. Scraped them clean and it's been running like a dream ever since. You guys were right on the money when you were talking about air flow, or lack of it!
