TOPIC: Pellet over flow

Pellet over flow 3 months, 3 weeks ago #17570

I'm running my 6039 on manual using the draft slide to control the air to the pot. No stirrer, factory pot. Instead of getting the cake, everyone talks about my pot just over flows with pellets and I have to spoon out pellets...i have slide almost all the way out and only running it at hr-2.

If your using the slide draft to control fire why are you running on manual, did you change some settings? The factory pot is not a clinker pot, it is not deep enough to make a solid or more solid cake. Pellets make a soft cake even in a deeper clinker pot.
Do you have the fresh air kit installed? On two with the stirrer installed the slide should be about 1/4 inch past the cleanout slides, I never tried it without the stirrer but it should be set close to that. Even without the stirrer having the slide all the way out your fire should be raging blowing ash and embers out of the pot. I would try cleaning vent and behind the fire brick wall first. Sounds like you are not getting enough draft. Is there a reason you are not using the stirrer or is that just your personal preference? Nothing wrong with not using it but if you are going clinker style you eventually might want to have a clinker post made or buy one for it will make it a better cake that way. Does the pot fill right up or is it taking hours to get there? Is it full of unbrunt pellets or mostly ash? Is your exhaust fan running, with stove on crack door can you hear the exhaust fan ramp up? Describe your vent set up and have you cleaned it yet this season? I usually only have to clean my vent twice a season this is the time of year I usually have to do a mid season vent cleaning. If you have the space around your house the leaf blower trick works great.

Pretty sure on manual you use slide to control draft...im thinkin your right bout cleaning, gonna do that today. My motor on stirrer died...i miss it, lol. It does take a few hrs to fill. im vented straight out. I dont hear exhaust fan, but not sure about it. It's about half and half as fas as unburnt pellets, prolly more unburnt then ash. Im gonna start with a clean out and get back to ya. thank you very much

Yes on manual you use the slide draft to control draft. But you can use the slide draft when on Auto also. What Auto does is sets the stove to factory draft settings and you then can use the slide to fine tune the draft. What manual does is puts your exhaust fan on high and it stays there. So when I asked you if you could hear the fan ramp up you could not because it is on high all the time. Your slide setting could be different then I said as I have never run the stove on manual. If you put it on auto then open the door you can tell if your exhaust fan is running or you can remove the right side panel to see if it is running.

What is your stirrer set on now? If you have 4 button panel it is the one marked AUX. Did you tape off the stirrer motor wires as you stated your motor died. This has nothing to do with the problem you are having. Just want you to be safe and not have power going to a broken motor.

Let us know what happens after a good cleaning. Next step after cleaning would be the is seeing if the exhaust/draft motor that I mentioned above is running full speed.

Good cleaning made a world of difference. My pipe didn't seem bad at all. Inside of stove was pretty bad though. Ash pan was full, i cleaned out the cleanouts. started it back up and already notice a huge difference. exhaust fan seems fine and yea it runs at 9 steady on manual. I went from auto to manual to get more air to the pot. Honestly think the biggest problem was neglect of cleaning:blush: Thanks again!!!!

If you can mix some corn in with the pellets that will give you a better clinker that might stay together enough to pull in one piece. Do you have some type of fork in the pot to help remove the clinker? Running on manual with the draft full blast is pulling a lot of heat out that could be used in the house.
I know it's a pain but you should figure out the auto settings for the feed rate and draft you will save a lot of pellets/corn and get much better heat from the stove. If you need help let us know, it can be a little confusing to begin with.
Other than the great advise AC gave you good luck, let us know how it works out.

Yea i'm gonna go back to auto and play with that a bit. Good point, firepot.I dont have a fork like thing in the pot. Only a few times has my ash caked up enough to do it. My method is when the pot gets full, ive been taking a table spoon and shoveling it out trying to get the clumps of stuff on bottom out. Leaving just enough in to keep fire going.
