Came home yesterday to a flame out flashing on the controller. I hadn't looked at in the last couple of days so figured out of pellets. Opened lid and had half full. Started investigating and the top auger wasn't turning. Pulled it out and it was packed with wet broken up pellets. Some bits of black pellets

Only thing I can figure is it back burned and set off the water deluge system. No water in tube though. Cleaned it all out and working good. No paint on the tubes melted. It was warm, close to 60, yesterday.

Good think you installed the safety system!

I worry about mine when we lose power.

I have never heard of a safety system that protects from back burn. How does this system work???

The Maxim's first safety system is the snap switch on top of the bottom auger that is about 2-3 inches from the auger end. If it it gets hot it turns the bottom auger on, while keeping the top auger off. If this happens you will see bb on the control panel

About 3-4" behind the snap switch is a heat sensing element that controls a dump valve. The dump valve dumps boiler water into the auger to put the burn back out. If this happens you will need to clean out the augers.

Is the dump valve something that comes with every boiler or does it have to be installed as an option. Also does it work if the power goes out? Always worried about back burn in my M250 especally when theres a power outage.

No power required. It is standard now. It came out a couple years ago and can be retrofitted.

I bet my boiler came out before it was a standard equipment, but i am gonna look into putting it on mine. Backburn is the biggest thing i worry about on my boiler.
