TOPIC: Ways to lite corn

Ways to lite corn 1 year ago #15502

Hi corn burners,

Haven't purchased a stove yet but you are all helping my decision.

In Australia pellets are $500 AUD ($530 US roughly) a tonne (2250 lbs roughly).
Corn roughly $350 AUD a tonne - Some cheap wheat can be found at $ 170 AUD a tonne.

Using pellets to lite a stove is a not great option at $500 AUD a tonne.

A igniter is good idea but from what I can see every 2 to 3 yrs would need replacing. I am trying to avoid parts shipped to Oz (Australia)if I can.

My Question - Can I use a mapp gas torch to lite the pot???

Regards Wayne

Even at the price you would have to pay for pellets to start the corn burning, they will still be a fairly inexpenensive fire starter. It usually only takes about a 6oz. cup of wood pellets to start a corn fire. It might take even less. Depends a little on the kind of burn pot the stove has and your experience. It's a bit of an "art" that you learn. If you were perfect at every attempt to start a fire a 40 pound supply of pellets would start the stove over 100 times.
Another thing to consider is something is needed to start the pellets. Fire starting gel or pellets soaked in a non-explosive liquid flammable. But liquids are not recommended for safety reasons. I use a Diamond Match product called "Strike-A-Fire". They are a wax impregnated fiber fire starting match. I use 1/2 a match broken into pieces. Light with a kitchen match. Works every time.
Countryside 3500P (pedestal version) used 10 yrs, 24/7 during days requiring heat. All original motors. Burns moldy corn, and pellets equally well. Burn it if you got it.

As Tall Corn said, wood pellets make starting
the fire easy. We use a propane torch to start
our wood pellets. I have a couple around for
other uses. One tank lasts two years.

I just wad up a couple of newspaper pages put it in the bottom of the burn pot add some corn or pellets lite it with a mapp torch turn on stove and hold the auger purge button lights every time.
If it's biomass and I can get it thru my stove I'll burn it.4rth yr burning with a Pinnacle Emerald and 3rd yr 1020 American Royal Biomass boiler.Wife loves the heat.
