I have gotten my Dovetec to fire twice so far. I have more experience with wood stoves but wanting some information.

1. The snap disc is slow (in my opinion) to come on could this be a sign that it is going out?

2. The flame is a good yellow color.(see picture) or at least I think it is. Should the flame be this tall or should it be short?

3. Is 50/50 a good ratio to burn corn/pellet or should I run a different ratio?

4. I have found the manual that is floating around, but it leaves allot to be desired. Can a reclaimer be used but not sure with my setup how to do it.

5. What is a good place to purchase corn cheap in central Indiana.

Any and all help is much appreciated.

A heat reclaimer isn't recommended for most corn or pellet stoves as it slows the exh down cooling it off then the ash settles in the pipe. If you are burning corn which is much more corrosive your exhaust pipes will not last very long.

In my experience, a snap disk either works or does not work. Working slow is a sign of ash acting as an insulator. It takes more heat to get thru to the disk. As far as corn to pellet ratio, is your stove capable of pellets safely? If it is a positive pressure stove, don't burn ANY pellets in it. You could easily start a fire in your house. If it is capable 50/50 sounds good. Any mixture works really.

According to the manual that I found it can burn both but I don't know if I should trust the manual. What is a positive pressure stove btw?

This was copied from the old forum:
"I believe the Dovetec is positive draft, that is, the combustion air is forced into the burn area and then exhausted, unlike more modern units where there is a draft inducing fan on the BACKSIDE of the combustion area, drawing out the products of combustion and venting them. That's why you are getting charred corn in the auger tube. If you were burning pellets, you'd have a full fledged burn back. Corn don't combust as readily as pellets do. "

A few homes have burned down due to fire traveling up the feed chute and igniting the pellets in the chute as well as in the hopper.
Hope this makes sense!

Hey, I also am in central Indiana. I buy my corn at the Cloverdale Agriculture Center. If you tell them it's for a corn stove, they will bag up clean corn for you at no extra charge. Has a lot less fines and trash in it. They also offer grain bank where you can buy all of your corn for the whole winter and they will store it for a very small fee. They are also open on Saturday. Not sure if this helps you or not but thought I'd let you know.
