I have burned corn for 2 years. I was told that I could not burn pellets unless I installed a negative draft kit. With the price of corn where it is now we are looking at getting the kit and burning pellets. Last year we burned about 175 bushels of corn, how many pounds of pellets would it take to compare to that?
Anything else I need to consider when burning pellets?

Thanks

Eric

Sorry- this ended up in the wrong section. I was thinking I was in the general burning section.... if someone wants to move it that would be great!

Thanks

Hi norules, You can just compare the heat per # to get your answer. Say a # of corn is 6800 btu's and pellets are 8000 btu's. Sounds like you used 9800 #'s of corn @ 6800 a # = 66,640,000 btu's. Divide that by 8000 and it looks like you will need 8330 #'s pellets. If you shop you will get them for alittle less than $200 bucks a ton.

Thanks much for the info!!!

Do pellets for a clincker or does it stay soft? If it stays soft will I have to shut down then to empty the burn pot?

Thanks

Hi again norules, The residue is soft but tends to hold togather. Since the stove is burning there will be half burned pellets on top that you can tip into burnpot. This will enable the fire to continue. The pellets seldom go out before your chore is done unlike corn. There are advantages to pellets. The one disadvantage is that they want to stand up in fuel bin more than corn which is more slippery. Also you will have to increase your air

Thanks much for the info again!!

I was thinking that I may not be able to "pop" it out like I could with corn and I did not want to have to shut down everyday!!

I think I am going to order the negative draft kit then so I can burn pellets. From what I understand that is the only thing that I need to change to make it work safely!! ..... and adjust the air.

Thanks again for all the help!

So now they are talking about a different auger. They say there is a multi-fuel auger....... Is that true and do I need it?

I am going to order the kit just not sure about the auger, and I just hope I can clean out the ash good without shutting down.

Thanks

The auger comes with the kit norules, if your getting it from Nesco and you will have no problem with fire going out.
