We have a corn burning Co-operative called the "Save Our Sky Home Heating Cooperative" for about 65 corn burners. We have two "Urban Grain Bins", a 25 ton capacity in Takoma park md and then another 15 ton bin in Mt. Rainer, MD. Our members bring 5 gal buckets that they fill with the corn - each bucket holds around 35lbs. Our corn comes from a local farmer, non-GMO, no till, low pesticides (only if necessary). We are paying about $4.50 a bucket. Was only about $2 when I started burning a few years ago (as you all know!).
Subject: Corn Mites - by: kmccune

I built a 250 bu box/bin in 2002, it holds enough for the winter. We fill it once and we are done, other then a weekly fill of the furnace bin, unless its really cold. There is a minor problem with corn mites with this amount of corn in a warm environment. We get about 5-6 gallons of what ever it is that they leave... mite poop, in the back corner of the bin at the end of the heating season? They them selves, end up in the furnace. Anyone know how to kill these little critters, mite poop does not burn well.
Subject: Optimum Basement Corn Storage box - by: Rickh

Hi, Tonight I am building a corn storage box in my basement. I have a question about optimum size. I have designed a box that will hold 40 bushels, but am wondering if I should build one that will hold what I use for a week to keep the moisture out and keep the corn moving through my EMT delivery System. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Rick

I have a dead upright freezer in basement I'm going to install a kanburn & use it as a storage bin, but I am wondering if I should lay it on it's back or would it be OK to just add a couple of hasp latches to the door & leave it upright?

Using 1 1/2" all the way. The run is from the trailer up 6' thru a semi-flex spa hose, across 24' pvc, down 5', thru the wall, up 4' then across another 6' to kanburn into 55 gal drum. I used rubber couplers at most joints so I can dissasemble & store in off season & just in case of blockage:evil:
I ran it up overhead so I didn't have to worry about catching it when bladeing the white stuff when needed.
It took 12 min. to load the barrel today.

Excuse the cluttered garage but here is my system. I back pu into garage and insert blue hose into corn. Corn vac sets on airtight box that holds 2 bushels or so of corn. Window on side tells me when full. Pull rv dump valve to empty into larger box (around 25 bushels) which has a slide door at bottom which allows corn to empty into bucket and carried into house. cyclone works very well in keeping dust out of shopvac
Subject: Converted auger grain trailer - by: shotgun

I picked up an old rusted out bottom auger wagon on a decent running gear at an auction for a little more than nothing.
I removed the auger & had a steel plate welded in to cover the hole it left in the front of the wagon then had a steel sheet bent into a V and relined the wagon from the bottom up the sides about 1/4 of the way. Next I torched a hole in the back of the wagon right at new floor level and fabbed a sliding gate over the hole. The total expense was less than $200
I'm currently using a wand laying in the corn right now but after this load going to put the intake in the gate.
Sorry for the long post , just wanted to throw the idea out there for anybody looking for a way to haul corn without spending a lot of $$
