It looks like our weather starts to hit the skids today, here in the Midwest. It's a balmy 43deg right now, but with a good strong NW wind of 16mph with lots of higher gusts. We actually had a few thunder boomers last night with the rain.

Rain continues and temps start falling after noon and then SNOW!!! Overnight low forecasted to be 17deg with windchill of about -6. Snowfall of a couple of inches expected.

I'll be firing up the big furnace this afternoon with a corn/pellet mix and setting the temp back on the Quad as backup.

Everyone ready?

Low of 0 here tonite with 20 mph winds. Why don't you see what the stove will do first, before firing up the big boy? May save some fuel?

I've been tossing that around in my head some. I'm curious what the 4 different fuel levels burn in pounds per hour on pellets. I'm estimating 60,000 btu with wood pellets to be about 7.5lbs/hour. That should be in "quad" with the gate wide open.

The stove will burn 1.7 to 7lbs per hr. depending on what setting you have it on. With the stove set on quad, the flame should extend approximately 6" out of the fire pot, if the feed rate is adjusted right. It shouldn't need to be wide open. The fan settings are heat output adjustments, not fuel levels. Kap

Good info for comparison sakes, thanks. I think I will give it a shot tonight. Based off of my limited use with the Quad and the weather the last few nights, I will try overnight on "high". This would be roughly the same amount of fuel needed in the big furnace for this weather...perhaps a little less.

As for feed rate adjustment, I have been running with the gate down as far as it will go. The ash is lighter colored and the flame looks better. With the gate open and fan setting on "medium", my flame is probably 6-8" above the burn pot.

The Quad performed quite admirably on the high setting. Overnight low of 17deg with 25mph winds constant and 40mph gusts. IMPRESSED!!
