I have a confusing problem. I had a new convection fan installed a few weeks ago. Then a problem started.

The fan will run for a few hours and then make a whining noise. It will make the intermittent noise for a while and then come on and off from every 15 minutes and then it will stop for a while. Sometimes for up to an hour. It only lasts for about 15 seconds. It stops if I shut off the fan or if I open the stove door. Then it stops for a while. Up to an hour.

The stoves been running now for about and hour now with no noise. I would think if it was a bad fan the noise would be constant.

Has anyone come across this situation before?

I been through two sets of fan bearings on a Bixby and the noise will come and go. Sometimes run for hours and not a peep then screech so bad that you want to throw the thing out the window. First time was not really a screech but just got progressively noisy. Second time started with come and go noise but steadily got worse.

I just ordered a new fan and now the one I have stopped making the noise. It's been running all day and not even one peep. Go figure. I'm supposed to return it for a credit when the new one arrives in a few days but if it is still not making any noise by the time the new one arrives I'm thinking of keeping the new one as a spare. My model stove is known for burning out convection motors.

Wishing you luck, Ernie. No harm keeping a spare if the core refund isn't much. Here is some detailed information on convection fans. Written for the Bixby but much is applicable to other stoves in general.

It explains that the Bixby convection fan has internal thermal protection that cuts it out if it overheats, whether from hot bearings or from a buildup of heat inside the stove. A plugged air filter is enough to prevent the stove from adequately cooling itself. The page is worth reading.

I'll get a full refund for the fan I return. I'll just pay for the shipping. Right after I ordered the new fan the one I have stopped making the noise. It ran all day yesterday and all night without one peep. It's running nice and quietly right now. I didn't do anything. It just stopped on it's own. Plenty of heat. I wish it would start making the noise again so I could justify buying the new one.

erniej,

This is exactly what my stove did in the first season I used it. It went away and never came back and now on its 6th season with same fan. I've got bearings around here somewhere to replace when they go bad. Good luck.
