I haven't been on here much this year, been working out of town for the last 9 months. The wife has been taking care of the little castile this winter. No problems this season. Take care everyone...

Welcome! This is a great place to bs, and talk about stoves, boilers, and furnaces. Make sure you check out the old corn forum, as there is a ton of info in that section also. Happy burning!

Welcome to the site, lots of info here, and make sure you check out the "old corn forum" for lots of past info. Too bad when this site was updated all the old threads stayed with the forum. Keep warm the winter season is just begining.....

Glad to see you still around Sting, even if you aren't burning anymore. Too bad this place slowed down with the high price of corn...

I'm jealous, you two have really nice setups! I love this kind of stuff, and planning is almost as much fun as doing it, lol...

Sounds cool, I want to add solar to my camper to make it self sufficient, I am thinking around 225 watts, and four 6v batteries will do. I think I can make it with little need for a generator, except microwave, and times when I need air conditioning.
Looks like you have a great use for your solar power. Did you build anymore solar air heaters?

I am in central WI (Stevens Point area). If you did not have irrigation around here, you have nothing, or just about nothing. As FirepotPete said it varies greatly. Just a few miles any direction, and corn is better. I am working in Menomonie WI (western area) and their corn was great, over 10' tall in the summer. My uncles planted about 40 acres, and one field, about 5 acres is all that they combinded. The rest went in the silos....

Congrats, looks like a nice setup!
What do you plan to power from this setup? How do you have it tied into your house to use?
I wanted to get my large solar water project done this summer but it did not happen, next summer for sure....

Hi MaryB. Don't need the controller but I just got a Morningstar 60 amp MPPT controller, which I highly recommend because you get sooooo much more total current out of your panels with this technology. I'm going for 7 of the 140 watt dpsolar panels myself.
How many batteries and what kind are you using? I'm using 6 golf cart 6 volt batteries with 230 amphour capacity and 460 minute reserve capacity.
Ok, now I am interested. What are you trying to run off this setup? I am thinking of doing 2 145w panels on my truck camper, along with 4 batteries. Nothing planned for the house yet. I am working on getting 700 sq.ft. of solar water heat panels built, for heating my house and shop infloor heat, and domestic water heat also.....

Thanks Corny, it's been a very bad year here for farmers, but the worst area in Wisconsin is right here in the middle of the state. You go any direction, and the conditions are not the greatist but better than here. I watched storms all summer long, dry up just before getting to our area. I am working a job, about 2 1/2 hours from here due west, and the corn was over 10 feet tall, and dark green, in contrast the corn here did not even make 6 feet tall, and was a very light green/yellowish color.
My uncles never have to buy corn or hay, but this past summer they had to go out and buy all the hay they could find, even the marshy hay. Now they are on the hunt for corn. Just before the weather dried up they even sold some corn, now they are looking to buy back, but at much higher prices, not a good situation.
I just feel bad for all the farmers that had to go through these extreme weather patterns we have been having the past few years.

Nice to be back, and nice to see you back Corny, also. I planted a little less than 2 acres of corn this spring, but then my luck we went through a drought worse then anyone around here can remember. My uncles have two farms, and planted about 40 acres of corn, and got nothing, not a field or even part of a field worth picking. I got lucky, I live in clay country, so my corn did better, I have some corn out there, just not a lot, but better than nothing. I only have about $300 in fuel, seed, and fertilizer, just a bunch of my time. I was actually fun, kinda hobbyish. I look forward to burning what I grew.....

Planted a little less than two acres this spring, then a BIG drought here, but I am in clay (heavy soil) so I have some corn to pick. Kinda fun to provide my own heat....
