Wow, we were in the low 80's yesterday. Will send some up your way. I still have my stove filled with the last of my fuel, and not sure if I will get a chance to burn it on a cool day at this point.

Just in case some of you new burners out there haven't "Summerized" before, here are a few tip on how to make your stove last longer. Give the stove a complete cleaning and get all the fly ash out as best you can, brushed and vac. Make sure to clean off the fan blades, some times a tooth brush makes this easier. Clean the exhaust pipe out, and put a bag or cover over the end of the exhaust to keep out critters and moisture. Moisture is the vent pipes worst enemy! Use a piece of non sticky blue or frog tape to go over the controls, to remind you to take off the cover before lighting next fall. Once clean, use a good oil to coat the inside of your stove to prevent any rusting. Fogging oils are good, and there are many other types mentioned over the years.
Now go enjoy summer, hope to see you all next fall.

SPRING is Here

With a few bags of corn and pellets to take the chill off some early mornings ahead, the season is almost over. I am so impressed with my PC45 stove! 9 Seasons of hard all out burning to supplement and supply heat to a 4K square foot commercial building and the only thing besides feed and clean for 9 years was 1 igniter replacement, and a couple extra stir rods! Over the weekend, I cleaned out the exhaust stack, which is about 14' up over and out from an inside wall. The only sign of any deterioration is a small amount of corrosion on the underside of the pipe where the vent cap attaches.
I know with the price of corn hovering around $6.50 a bushel, it's hard to burn too much corn, but I just love the way a mix with pellets burn and heat. With pellets costing most of the time about $179 a ton or less, I still save money and the heat is so much better with both the stove and biomass boiler running.
This may be my last season burning, as we are selling the building and maybe the stove and boiler with it, and going to build an earth berm-ed home. May be able to use them there too, but will have to wait and see.
A tip of the hat and much thanks to all you wonderful people on this site, who have shared knowledge and experiences to make this a very enjoyable journey. It was fun building the first Kan_Burn corn cleaner and experimenting with that, and still have and use a slightly varied version of the original. Hope to be back here this fall, and who knows, we may not have the building sold by then, and back to burning!!! You never know. Thanks again, and God Bless You. Rob and Marsheilla

Thanks again JA. It's been starting to stay warm, gave the boiler a good cleaning and she is sitting quietly in the basement. Cleaned the overdue exhaust in the stoves, and have 5 bags of pellets and 5 big bags of corn to burn up. We have our business on the market, and most of the prospective buyers really enjoy looking at the stove, watching it burning, and then seeing the boiler downstairs. I hope to take them with me, but this may be the last I burn the stove, unless they don't want to bother with them. We are looking to build an earth bermed home and take advantage of the natural geothermal heating and cooling. Use the sun to warm during the winter with a massive concrete floor (with radiant floor heat as a backup). Would love to have the stove in there, so will have to see if she sells or not.
Let's hope we have a nice spring, and it doesn't go straight into summer, like it has in the past. Have a great summer and hope to see you all in fall.

Nice, setup is coming right along! Are you going to blanket those ducts? Better keep the little poults away from the return air, You might have a feather pluck-er and cooker in one. Quality work as always, Burnsalot!

Will you be importing extra litter, or do you create enough on site to power the furnace?

I went thru about a ton this year, which is way less than the 5 to 7 tons I normally go thru. I will always mix some corn with pellets but if it gets cheaper again, I will mix a little pellets with the corn, as it should be!

Got the boiler shut down (actually ran out of fuel) so I decided let's put her away for the season. Low and behold, no leek. I am really guessing having the black iron vent to the chimney attached in way below freezing conditions had a major part of the dripping I saw. Still half tempted to fire her back up for a couple more days, but will resist. Don't want to have to re-clean all over again. So all is well.

I have the last of my bags in the boiler, and 2 bags upstairs by the stove. Picked up one more ton for the stove, and when the boiler runs our, it's clean and lube time. Hope 52 bags get me into April and some warm weather!!!

I have a 800 watt inverter, a deep cell battery and I have only used once in 8 years, knock on wood. It won't ignite the stove, but it will run it well, motors seem to run just a little slower, you can hear a lower pitch in them. My stove only requires 400 watts to run.

Hi Sean, and welcome to the forum! I get Somerset pellets from Menards for $3.59 a bag / $179 a ton and corn is $7.12 a bu right now. What part of Canada are you in?

You can get a cheaper inverter only, but it's a more secure feeling that if the power goes out, your battery is fully charged and the inverter will switch the power to the batter and back when the electric comes back on.

Something else to check: if you have the fan running on the combustion blower when set on start, (after the light goes out) check your snap switch on the exhaust pipe is making good contact and working correctly (if you have a boiler) or (if furnace) the lower limit switch is good. It does sound like a faulty timer, but check and make sure it's seated good in the cube. Good Luck
